While going out in public without shaving your legs or
armpits is still a strong statement, that can turn a lot of heads, more and
more celebrities are embracing the au naturale look. Dyed armpit hair is a
growing trend on social media, but plenty of start have abandoned the razor
without thinking of neon colors.
Find out more about the celebrities who don’t shave, from
Miley Cyrus’ bold armpit hair color to Cameron Diaz’ take on living the rest of
your life with a “hairless vagina”.
Definitely a champion of armpit hair, Miley has even
complained that it has been photoshopped out of certain pictures. On Instagram,
the singer thanked controversial fashion photographer Terry Richardson for
keeping it real, but later deleted her comment:
“Thank you for not retouching
my body hair like SOME people #comeasyouare #iloveyou.”
Many celebrities who don’t shave have made a big splash in
recent years, but Julia Roberts was truly a trailblazer in 1999, when she
showed off her armpits in a sleeveless dress at the London premiere of “Notting
Hill”. While most tabloids tried to shame her and make fun of her, Roberts knew
what she was doing, and her statement may have inspired many.
“It was so uncomfortable and painful,” Mo’Nique told Barbara
Walters about the only time she shaved her legs. The actress made waves on the
red carpet by showing up with hairy legs, which her husband Sid loves. “If Sid
likes the hairy legs, there you go… I’m 42 and very hairy,” the Academy Award
winner explained in 2010, refusing to be shamed for her decision.
While she’s not currently one of the celebrities who don’t
shave, Kristen Stewart had to deal with body shaming and even bullying while
growing up because she didn’t shave her legs. “I remember this girl in sixth
grade looked at me in gym and was like, ‘Oh my God! That’s disgusting — you
don’t shave your legs!” the “Twilight” star told Vanity Fair.
Known for being part of “Dresden Dolls” and for her
controversial Kickstarter campaign, singer Amanda Palmer also refuses to shave
her armpits. After showing them off on the red carpet, Palmer tweeted “Hopefully
between me Mo’Nique, we’ll change the cultural beauty shaving
standard this year.” The beauty standard endures, but in 2015 the fact that one
of the biggest popstars in the world shows off her armpits after dying them
pink is progress.
Known for her roles in “Blossom” and “The Big Bang Theory”, Mayim
Bialik isn’t just one of the celebrities who don’t shave, she’s never used a
razor in her life. “I remain the tomboy/feminist who has never in her life
shaved her legs or armpits. Ever. The decision was made in early adolescence,
maybe when I was 14 and all the girls in my school–none of whom had any hair on
their bodies–started shaving because it was “grown-up.” Whatever. Seemed like a
waste of time, a conformity that disgusted me (I was a feisty feminist even at
14),” she wrote on her Kveller.com blog.
Some call her a hippie, but Drew Barrymore has embraced her
armpit hair even since the early 2000s, and hasn’t looked back.
The former member of “Destiny’s Child” is also one of the celebrities
who don’t shave, and she made a statement by attending a Beauty Awards Ceremony
without shaving her armpits.
Bullied as a teen for her armpit hair and for refusing to
shave her legs, the Queen of Pop also came out in favor of the au naturale look
on Instagram: “Long hair…..Don’t Care!!!”
Few celebrities who don’t shave talk about their intimate grooming,
but Cameron Diaz wrote a veritable “In Praise of Pubes” essay in “The Body
Book: Feed, Move, Understand And Love Your Amazing Body”. The actress explained
that “Pubes keep the goods private, which can entice a lover to come and take a
closer look at what you have to offer. Also, let’s be honest: just like every
other part of your body, your labia major is not immune to gravity. Do you
really want a hairless vagina for the rest of your life?”
